Women in Science, IISER Pune
"Closing the gender gap requires dismantling gender stereotypes and promoting role models that encourage girls to choose science; developing programmes to support the advancement of women in science; and cultivating a working environment that nurtures the talents of all, including women members of minority communities." - António Guterres, Secy Genl, United Nations
IISER’s Women in Science Committee is dedicated to promoting gender equity by empowering women and those with intersecting identities, by recognizing their significant contributions to scientific progress while acknowledging the many challenges that they continue to face. The WISC’s mission is to foster an environment of equal opportunity, where all the women in the institute, including scientists, researchers and women supporting the able functioning of the ecosystem, are supported, celebrated and encouraged to reach their full potential. We aim to achieve this by facilitating events that promote gender equity, raise awareness in the community regarding issues women face and enable supporting their career development. We will highlight the achievements of women in science, thereby increasing visibility of their contributions to inspire the next generation. Additionally, we also aim to strengthen early career women researchers through community-building activities. In all, the WISC committee hopes to create a support network for early career women researchers and faculty dealing with specific challenges unique to them.
The committee envisions a future where women in science are no longer an exception but a norm, where gender equity is embedded in every aspect of our functioning and where women of all backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to and lead in the scientific endeavours of the institute. This, we sincerely hope, will create a more inclusive and equitable scientific community, where everyone, regardless of gender, can pursue their passions and realize their potential in science.
